Minna no Union is a cross-border web platform union built so working people — employees, freelancers, gig workers, the precarious, the migrants — can speak, share, and stand together online, without isolation and without fear of retaliation.

Husband & Wife. Co-Founders.

Co-founded by
Mr. & Mrs. Nakano.

A husband-and-wife team who chose to build, together, what they had each long wished existed: a place where working people are no longer asked to bear their voices alone. This union is their small, shared promise — both as partners in life, and as partners in this work.

Vision & Voice

The force that imposes silence always targets the individual. So we build a place that transcends the individual.

What hurts working people most is not the wrongdoing itself, but the moment of "this isn't right" with no one beside us to share it with. The force that imposes silence always isolates the individual — making us tired, alone, and quietly resigned.

So what I wanted to build is a place that goes beyond the individual. A circle where everyone whose life involves work — across contract types, across borders, across industries, across job titles — can stand together. A place to start solidarity from one person, without expert knowledge, without complex procedures, without your employer's permission.

This is not a place to attack anyone or any company. It is a small attempt, in the age of the web, to protect what should never have been negotiable: the dignity of working people, freedom of expression, and freedom of association.

Architecture & Law

Crossing borders is not a renunciation of responsibility. It is a layering of responsibilities.

We placed our headquarters in the Kingdom of Cambodia not to flee accountability, but because online expression no longer fits inside any single country's borders. Hosting, networks, users, the subject matter — everything crosses. And yet "the voices of working people" are still pressed back into one nation's frame. We wanted to face that contradiction directly.

Cambodia's Constitution, international human rights norms, and international labor standards form our principled, normative base. For matters closely tied to Japan, we layer on Articles 21 and 28 of Japan's Constitution and Japanese labor law. For matters tied to other countries, we layer on their constitutions and labor laws. That layering — not renunciation — is how a cross-border platform takes responsibility.

We do not collect membership fees. We do not coerce activity. We respect anonymous expression, and we do not remove posts merely because an employer found them unpleasant. To simply protect the voices of working people — that is why we kept only the minimum rules necessary.

About

A union, and
a platform.

We are a solidarity body with two natures.

One is Minna no Union as a labor union — a body where working people unite, speak, and act collectively when needed. For activity in Japan, our foundational basis is Article 28 of the Japanese Constitution, which guarantees workers' rights to organize, bargain, and act collectively.

The other is Minna no Union as a web platform — a cross-border online mechanism for posting, consultation, information sharing, the creation of participating unions, recruitment, statements, document submission, mutual aid, and the formation of solidarity.

The two natures do not contradict each other.

Activities

Building solidarity,
on the web.

Web

Our activity, and that of every participating union, lives primarily on the web. Working conditions, workplace environment, harassment, wages, dismissal, resignation, hiring, outsourcing, freelance contracts, workplace injustice, employer conduct, vendor conduct, social pressure, the dignity of working people — on all matters that touch on what it means to work, we publish opinions, requests, problem statements, lived experiences, statements, articles, and calls for participation.

These are not casual complaints or private grievances. They are part of a cross-border practice of consultation, information sharing, expression, mutual aid, public-interest problem raising, and the formation of solidarity by working people themselves.

01

Make voices visible

We deliver opinions, requests, problem statements, lived experiences, and statements about working conditions, workplace environment, harassment, wages, dismissal, hiring, outsourcing, freelance contracts, workplace injustice, and the dignity of working people, into the open online space.

02

Anyone can start a participating union

Without complex procedures or expert knowledge, anyone can create a participating union online, recruit allies, and begin raising their voice. A participating union can start from a single person.

03

And, when needed, in the real world

In addition to online expression, we engage in real-world activity when needed — formal requests, explanations, dialogue, collective expression of position, consultation with relevant authorities, and any other action required to fulfill our purpose.

04

Maximal respect for expression

We do not, as a matter of course, remove posts simply because an employer or company found their content unpleasant, took them critically, or wished them removed. We treat as paramount that the voices of working people must not be unjustly crushed.

05

Anonymity, protected reasonably

Recognizing that some working people cannot raise their voices under their real names, we permit anonymous membership, expression, and participating union creation. Anonymity is a mechanism that protects working people from retaliation — not a shield for misconduct.

06

Anti-social forces are categorically excluded

We do not, under any circumstance, permit the membership, activity, participating union creation, or posting of organized-crime groups or their members. Where a violation is identified, we take action — including expulsion — without prior notice.

Manifesto

That working people shall not be isolated, nor silenced by fear of retaliation, disadvantage, harassment, or coerced silence. That they shall have the chance, online, to consult, to speak, to share, to aid one another, and to form solidarity. — That, in itself, is the reason we exist.
